Washington certifies dietitians and nutritionists. However, there is no certification requirement for providing nutrition care. Only state certified individuals may use the titles: "certified dietitian" and "certified nutritionist".

Qualification Requirements for State Licensure or State Certification:
- Academic: Nutritionists: Evidence of registration as a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, or a master's or higher degree in human nutrition, nutrition education, foods and nutrition, or public health nutrition from a regionally accredited institution. Dietitians: A bachelor's or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution and a major course of study in human nutrition, foods and nutrition, dietetics, or food systems management.
- Experience: Dietitians: Completion of a planned continuous preprofessional experience in dietetic practice of at least 900 hours under the supervision of a certified dietitian or a registered dietitian, or completion of a coordinated undergraduate program in dietetics. Nutritionists: Not applicable.
- Examination: Dietitians: The Registered Dietitian (RD) examination established by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Nutritionists: Not applicable.
